What in the world did we do before the GPS? I guess we used maps? By “we,” I mean everyone but me. Can we all agree that you need a Masters in Engineering to read one? The first step is always the hardest. Figuring out how to hold the map in relation to the direction you’re driving. North-South-East-or West, who knew it made a difference? And forget folding a map back up. The GPS is our most valued travel companion. When we’re on the road, I never worry about getting lost.
Recently, I drove to Winston Salem for the first time. I planned to rely heavily on the GPS. My dad doesn’t quite have the same relationship with technology. He spent most of the morning telling us what he felt was the best route to take, naming highways and exits I’ve never heard of. I was secretly tuning him out. I didn’t need his directions. Right?
